Calendars featuring pictures of a surfing sculpture in goofy garb are now on sale in Encinitas.

The 13-month calendar —- created by locals Wayne Lynch and Fred Caldwell —- gives a month-by-month glance at costumes that have adorned the city's "The Magic Carpet Ride" sculpture at Chesterfield Drive and South Coast Highway 101.

The bronze sculpture has been plagued by pranksters and unofficially dubbed the "Cardiff Kook" since it was installed in 2007. Critics have said the surfer depicted in the piece has an effeminate stance and looks like a novice.

Del Mar Race Track. 150x150 Fairgrounds’ Purchase Debate ContinuesCOAST CITIES — Del Mar Mayor Richard Earnest and Councilman Carl Hilliard asked Solana Beach City Council at its Oct. 27 meeting to support its purchase of the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Tim Fennell, the facility’s general manager, was given equal time at the Nov. 17 meeting to explain why he thought the acquisition was a bad idea.

Following that presentation, Solana Beach City Councilman Dave Roberts, who along with Mayor Tom Campbell makes up a subcommittee that has been discussing the sale with Del Mar, was still unclear about Fennell’s comment that the current fair board supports “true regional control.”
